Live Arts gives you Hank Williams

Live Arts is proud to present Hank Williams:
Lost Highway, a spectacular musical following the life of legendary singer/songwriter Hank Williams, from his incredible rise to fame to his tragic self-destruction at age 29. This innovative and entertaining play, by Randal Myler and Mark Harelik, juxtaposes the songs of Hank Williams with dramatized episodes from his personal and professional life.

Hank Williams’ soulful, timeless country tunes have inspired covers by musicians from Bob Dylan to Louis Armstrong, Beck to Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline to Ray Charles. In 1961, Williams was the first artist elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame, and in 1987, he was inducted into the third class of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for his incredible influence in the development of American pop music.

Born Hiram Williams in Mount Olive, Alabama in 1923, Hank Williams learned gospel music from his mother—the organist at a Baptist church—and blues and pop from a black street musician. At age 16 he formed his first band, an early incarnation of the group that would become his legendary “Drifting Cowboys.” By age 23 he had moved to Nashville, where he landed a recording contact with MGM in less than a year. His 1949 release, “Lovesick Blues,” stayed at the top of the Country & Western Top Ten chart for fifteen months, and when he debuted on the Grand Ol’ Opry stage in the same year, he earned six encores.

In less than four years, Hank Williams had produced 11 million-selling singles and had topped the Country & Western Top Ten chart 36 times. His classic songs—from “Your Cheatin’ Heart”
to “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry”—endure as true American classics, speaking to fans of country, blues, pop, and rock music alike. Williams paved the way for a new era of country music: the work of Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, and Williams’ own son Hank Williams Jr. would not have been possible without his pioneering artistry.

And now, at Live Arts, this musical pioneer is back in full force!
Hank Williams: Lost Highway features an incredible array of Virginian talent. Dallas Wesley (Hank), who hails from Lynchburg, Virginia, has written recorded, and produced two albums of original material and played live shows both throughout Virginia and abroad. In the fall of
2009 he was invited to England to play in the Buckingham Music Society Festival. Ever since he first picked up a guitar at age 13, he has been playing and writing. He wrote and recorded his first full album, No Cover, at age 23, and his second, Glimpse of You, a year later. He is currently working on his third.

Joining Dallas Wesley is an impressive array of musicians and actors, including the remarkable quartet that portrays his band, “The Drifting Cowboys.” Dan Sebring has taught music in Charlottesville for over 30 years. He has been a member of The Blue Ridge Chamber Orchestra and the Chesapeake String Quartet and instructs classes in strings, jazz, rock, and classic guitar. Bahlmann Abbot, a lifelong guitarist and song-writer, has long drawn inspiration from the music of Hank Williams and his fellow country pioneers. Jeffrey Justice, who has been acting since age 12 and playing violin since 17, trained in jazz at the Berklee School of Music. And Thomas Gunn, a graduate of Berklee with a degree in film scoring, has been playing and writing music for over three decades.

The Live Arts cast will include: Dallas Wesley as Hank Williams; Thomas Gunn, Bahlmann Abbot, Dan Sebring, and Jeffrey Justice as “The Drifting Cowboys”; and Aer Stephen, Deidre Wesley, Jane Lynch, Mary Beth Revak, and Steve Smith.

Hank Williams: Lost Highway will perform from March 19 to April 11, 8pm on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays and 7:30pm on Thursdays.
There will be a 2pm Sunday Matinee on March 28 and on April 11.
Wednesday performances are Pay What You Can. There will be a free preview on Thursday, March 18. Tickets for the free preview are available at the offices of C-Ville Weekly on the Downtown Mall.
Tickets may be purchased online at www.livearts.org or by calling the Live Arts Box Office at 434-977-4177 x 108. Hank Williams: Lost Highway is sponsored by R. E. Lee & Son, Inc. and Escafé.

Girl Scouts Milk and Cookie Break

Treat Your Staff to a Milk & Cookies Break!

What could be better than milk and cookies?  Milk and Girl Scout cookies, delivered to your office and served by your own local Girl Scout troops!

The girls will also set up a cookie booth with additional cookies available for purchase.  It’s a great way to say thank-you to your employees while you support Girl Scouts of Virginia Skyline Council.

Here’s how it works:

   •    First, contact Arlene Wilhelm, Product Sales Manager for the Girl Scout council.

   •    Next, a local Girl Scout troop will contact you to confirm the details for your Milk & Cookies Break.  Late afternoon works best for troops, as it presents the least conflict with school schedules.  (Payday is a great time!)

   •    Pre-order the cookies from the troop contact.  Plan on purchasing some of each of the eight varieties so that your employees can sample them all!   We suggest that you provide a beverage to be served along with the cookies.  We don’t supply the milk!

   •    Please promote the event to your employees and make them aware that cookies will also be available for purchase.

   •    On the day of your Milk & Cookies Break, please provide a table for the girls to set up their booth.  The troop members will bring their own materials for the booth and adequate serving supplies to serve the cookies to employees.

   •    Make your payment for your pre-order of cookies directly to the troop.

To set your Milk & Cookies Break in motion, contact Arlene Wilhelm at awilhelm@gsvsc.org or (540) 777-5105.  Then watch all those big smiles pop up around the office!

Girl Scouts of Virginia Skyline Council is a leadership program for girls that develops life skills in business, science, and technology; provides adventures and challenges in sports, the environment, and the great outdoors; and encourages girls to give back to their communities through service projects conducted locally, across the United States, and internationally.

Kids In the Kitchen (Junior League of Charlottesville)

The Junior League of Charlottesville will host a day of cooking, hands-on activities, fitness demonstrations and education as part of their international childhood obesity and nutrition education initiative, Junior League’s Kids in the Kitchen.  Sponsored by the Association of Junior Leagues International (AJLI), the event will take place on March 27, 2010 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the AlbemarleHigh School cafeteria.  There will be a yoga station, a smoothie station and many more fun activities for the kids.  ACAC, UVA Health Systems and Blue Ridge Eco Shop are all fully sponsoring booths. All children and parents are invited to attend free of charge.
Kids in the Kitchen seeks to educate children about healthy living.  Even today, studies show that that childhood obesity is the leading cause of many health issues including pediatric hypertension, Type II diabetes and coronary heart disease.
Estimates now project that nearly half of the children in North and South America will be overweight by the end of 2010.
The Junior League of Charlottesville believes that education in our community is the first step to raising awareness of childhood obesity and its associated health issues; and, that the education of our children is the key to making a lasting change in the reversal of current childhood obesity statistics.  Through Kids in the Kitchen, the Junior League of Charlottesville aims to provide children with the tools they need to make healthy choices.

Walk a mile for Sara

Can men walking in red patent leather pumps or gold lame heels offer any kind of promise for a safer world?
You bet they can!
Last year, over 60 men marched against sexual violence in our community. This year, we’re expecting over 100!
If you are a guy, or if you know a guy, then you have a chance to make a difference on April 18th, when a big group of men from our area will march on the Downtown Mall in shoes typically worn by women – high heels, ballet flats, you name it! It’s an attention-grabbing effort to draw our community’s notice to the current epidemic of sexual assault – 1 in 4 women and 1 in 8 men are sexually assaulted in their lifetimes. This is not okay, and all genders have a huge role to play in decreasing these numbers – as vital community leaders, allies, friends, survivors, and change-makers! So take the first step, and get a team together to walk against sexual assault. For more information, and to register, please visit our website at http://saracville.org/walk10.htm
